Description

It is because of the heterogeneity of its growing regions that Colombian coffee is world renown. Its various microclimates, altitudes and geographic conditions allow Colombia to boast a multitude of coffee with differing characteristics.

Northern-grown coffees tend to be more full bodied, with deeper, more earthy tastes, medium acidity and nutty tones. Coffees from central regions are more balanced, with fruity and herbaceous notes. Finally, the southern regions are appreciated for the production of medium bodied mild coffees, with citrus hints giving slight acidity.

There are presently over 500,000 coffee producers. The increasing popularity of Colombia’s special varieties has changed the relationships between supply chain parties in largely positive ways. A focus on specialty coffee encourages, if not requires, accurate traceability. For farmers, this means having their family name and story linked to their coffee, creating individual branding of sorts. This in turn furthers long-term relationships with roasters, increasing the value of their work.
